WPS Teacher Holly Benjamin named Outstanding Art Teacher of the Year

Wyoming Primary Schools Teacher Holly Benjamin has received the Outstanding Art Teacher Award from the Ohio Art Education Association (OAEA)! For the past 23 years, Ms. Benjamin has poured her heart into sharing her love of art with young learners, inspiring them to see themselves not just as students, but as artists.

"Holly balances structure with freedom, encouraging her students to explore, take risks, and embrace their unique voices," said Regional Director of the Southwest OAEA Jamie Schorsch. "Every child leaves her classroom with the confidence to create fearlessly, reflect deeply, and value their work."

Ms. Benjamin showcases student artwork at district and state levels, ensures art is celebrated throughout her community, and incorporates recycled materials into lessons to teach creativity alongside environmental stewardship. "Holly also extends her passion beyond the classroom, bringing the school and community together through art," said Wyoming City Schools Director of Pupil Services Dr. Gina Kirchner. "Whether through vibrant hallway displays, collaborative projects, or special events showcasing student work, she ensures that art has a visible and celebrated presence in her school."

Her impact is measured not just in exhibitions and accolades, but in the way she makes people feel. Colleagues describer her as warm and full or humor. Students describe her as inspiring, joyful, and empowering. She teaches her students to see the world through an artist's lens, embrace individuality, and dream big.

"Holly deeply values each child's artistic voice, encouraging them to take risks and express themselves," said Wyoming High School Art Teacher Chris Walters. "It's clear that her classroom is not just a space for art - it's a space for growth, self-discovery, and joy."
