At Wyoming City Schools, we believe in building opportunities for the Wyoming Community to come together and be engaged in conversations around topics that matter. With that in mind, we are excited to restart our CommUNITY Conversation Series! Mark your calendars for Thursday, November 18; Thursday, January 27; and Wednesday, April 6. On each night, we’ll explore a topic, engage in small group discussions, and gather feedback to build upon in our ongoing work to continuously improve.

The 2021-2022 CommUNITY Conversation Series will take place at 7 p.m. at Wyoming High School and cover the following topics:

Thursday, November 18: Belonging

Thursday, January 27: Strategic Planning

Wednesday, April 6: Financial Update

Based upon correspondence we’ve received and comments at our most recent Board of Education meetings, we believe there is a misconception about what Critical Race Theory is and what it means for education. In response, we’d like to start this year’s CommUNITY Conversation series addressing the work Wyoming City Schools is doing related to diversity, inclusion, and fostering a sense of belonging in all members of our Wyoming school community.

Critical Race Theory is an advanced academic framework most commonly found in law schools and colleges that examines the systems, policies and laws that perpetuate racial inequities in our society, and how those inequities can be eliminated. There are people who do not support conversations related to race during the school day, who define Critical Race Theory differently and are accusing school districts of teaching Critical Race Theory as they define it. By either definition, Wyoming City Schools does not teach Critical Race Theory. 

Wyoming City Schools teaches a thorough, accurate, and fact-based history education that aligns with Ohio’s Learning Standards for Social Studies. Wyoming teachers are thoughtful in how they teach the hard parts of history. They facilitate discussion on difficult, important topics to help students grow, develop, and learn to think for themselves.

In Wyoming City Schools, we teach that racism is wrong. Wyoming students learn to value, recognize, and respect the humanity and dignity of every person. We are proud of the diversity of our student body and believe it’s imperative we give our students learning environments where their identities and voices are affirmed, valued, and represented. Rooted in our Climate and Culture goal area, we are working to create a school community culture where all members feel connected and engaged. We are building a culture where all members feel a true sense of belonging. This work helps to support our students today while also preparing them for their future in an ever-changing world.
