Wyoming Middle School students Sophie Andreassen, Elana Berman, Ella Fernandez, Maggie Galvin and Alexis Kraus competed in the Power of the Pen State Tournament virtually hosted by Otterbein University on May 15. Tournament awards have been announced and the Wyoming Middle School 7th Grade Team placed 7th out of 166 schools!
Additionally, several Wyoming Middle School Power of the Pen team alumni received awards recognizing their past accomplishments:
Katie Callahan earned a scholarship to Otterbein University for her outstanding work over her time with Power of the Pen and she has been published in this year's Power of the Pen Book of Winners.
Madeline Dugan has been published in this year's Power of the Pen Book of Winners.
Zola Hoffmeister, a former Power of the Pen Best of Best award winner, presented this year's Platinum Pen Awards.
Lily Valerius is the inaugural recipient of the Power of the Pen Founders Award. "I’ll always be grateful to Power of the Pen for giving me the opportunity to become a more creative and confident writer and for helping me receive constructive criticism on my work," said Ms. Valerius.
"Power of the Pen is a wonderful opportunity for students because it allows creative writers – who often write on their own, in solitude – to find a community of other writers who share their love of words and storytelling," said WMS Teacher and Power of the Pen Southwest Regional Director Jenn Sauvey.
Among Power of the Pen alumni featured in this year's state program was Newbery Honor Author and former Wyoming Middle School student Jasmine Warga. Ms. Warga is the author of four books for young adults, including the Newbery Honor winner Other Words for Home.
“Power of the Pen undoubtedly shaped my life as a writer,” said Ms. Warga. Power of the Pen was one of the first experiences in her life when adults referred to her as a writer and it taught her writers need to practice. “The more hours you put into your craft, the more you will get out of it,” she said. “It also gave me the opportunity to explore lots of different styles of writing, playing with genre and perspective, and this helped open up my own writing in numerous ways.”
